Lecture: Clash of...Which Cultures?

Head and shoulder portrait of James Haley

Delve deeper into the pivotal Battle of San Jacinto and the Texas Revolution with a distinguished lineup of four renowned historians and scholars. This engaging lecture series offers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the historical events that shaped Texas.  Lectures will take place before, between, and after the two reenactments.  Each lecture will be approximately 30 minutes long with an opportunity for a question-and-answer session following its conclusion. Admission to the lecture series is free, making it accessible to all who wish to enrich their knowledge of Texas history.

Dr. James Haley presents "Clash of...Which Cultures?" in the first session of the San Jacinto Day Celebration Lecture Series.  During the Anglo colonization of Texas, the conflicts between Latino and Anglo-American residents is now often described as a "clash of cultures."  In important respects, however, neither population was representative of its mother culture.  James Haley will discuss how rapidly the raw conditions in Texas shaped their divergence into new identities.

James L. Haley is one of the best-known chroniclers of Texas history.  Among his 25 books, most notable is his long-standing biography, Sam Houston, and his 600-page history of Texas, Passionate Nation.  Among several prizes he has won the Western Writers of America Spur Award twice, and the Texas Historical Commission Book Award twice.  He is a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association and a member of the Texas Institute of Letters. He is most proud of his tenure as a tour guide at the Texas State Capitol, where he sometimes got into trouble for telling more history than he was supposed to.

Lectures will be presented in the Jesse H. Jones Theatre for Texas Studies inside the San Jacinto Monument.
