WRIGHT, GEORGE WASHINGTON--Born in Tennessee, November 15, 1810, a son of George and Mary Wright. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 356 for 320 acres of land December 14, 1847 for having served in the army from July 5 to October 5, 1836. He was living in Victoria County, March 14, 1851 when he sold the certificate to Robert Toombs for $500.00. He was a member of Captain William H. Patton's COLUMBIA COMPANY at San Jacinto and received Donation Certificate No. 300 June 7, 1838 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle.
In Headright Certificate No. 132 issued to Mr. Wright January 25, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Brazoria County it is stated that he came to Texas before May 2, 1835. Miss Arvilla Wright, daughter of George W. Wright, wrote to the compiler June 12, 1934 that her father came to Texas in 1835.
On October 15, 1839 Mr. Wright was married to Amanda Riley, who was born in Tennessee, October 23, 1821, a daughter of James and Pamela Wright who were not related to George W Wright. Mr. Wright died March 14, 1877. Mrs. Wright died January 28, 1895. The two are buried in the Wright Family cemetery on their ranch TWIN OAKS in Live Oak County. The land was granted Mr. Wright for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Wright were: (1) Darthulia, who married Pleasant Hagy, she died in Live Oak County; (2) Saluria, who married S.W. Swearingen, she died in Live Oak County; (3) Izoria, married Dan Haynie of Bastrop, as a widow she lived in Austin; (4) Bell, (5) Arvilla Wright lived in Austin and was an employee of the Texas State Library; (6) Alburta, married W.C. Bowen and lived in Austin; (7) Orion B. Wright died in Phoenix, Arizona; (8) Ola Lee, married Judge W.B. Hopkins and lived in Corpus Christi; and (9) Willis B. Wright, died in Mexico City, Mexico.
