SUMMERS, WILLIAM W. -- Arrived at Velasco, January 28, 1836 on the schooner Pennsylvania, having been recruited for the army of Texas in New Orleans by Captain Amasa Turner. The fact that he arrived in Texas in January, 1836 is verified in Headright Certificate No. 286 issued to him by the Harrisburg County Board for one-third of a league of land in 1838.
Mr. Summers was Second Lieutenant in Captain Amasa Turner's Company at San Jacinto. On July 10, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 485 for 640 acres for having participated in the battle. He received Bounty Certificate No. 2774, dated April 6, 1838, for 1280 acres of land for having served in the army from February 13, 1836 to February 20, 1837. A muster roll at the General Land Office shows that as First Lieutenant of Captain John Smith's Company February 28, 1837, Mr. Summers was on detached service at the San Jacinto battlefield.
The Marriage Records of Harrisburg County disclose that Mr. Summers and Susan Vine were married at Houston January 1, 1838 by C. C. Dyer, a justice of the peace of Harrisburg County. They moved to Fort Bend County and there, according to the Probate Records of that County, Mr. Summers died in 1856.
He is buried on the Headwaters of Oyster Creek near Richmond.
