McCOY, JOHN -- Arrived in Texas in 1835, as is shown in the Headright Certificate issued to him March 29, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Houston County Board. The certificate had been assigned to M. Huling. He was a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's NACOGDOCHES COMPANY at San Jacinto but did not apply for the land due him for his services in the army; he is shown on a muster roll at the General Land Office as having enlisted in Captain Arnold's Company March 6, 1836.
A John McCoy is shown as having enlisted in Captain William D. Burnett's Company, June 6, 1836, and as having died at the camp at Victoria, August 30, 1836.
Written by Louis W. Kemp, between 1930 and 1952. Please note that typographical and factual errors have not been corrected from the original sketches. The biographies have been scanned from the original typescripts, a process that sometimes allows for mistakes in the new text.
