SLACK, JOSEPH H. -- Came to Texas in November, 1835. This is shown in the Headright Certificate No. 97 issued to him by the Fort Bend County Board in 1838 for one-third of a league of land. In Comptroller's Service Record No. 579 it is stated that Mr. Slack served in the army from March 6 to June 12, 1836, in the companies of Captains Daniel Perry and William S. Fisher and was in Captain Fisher's Company at San Jacinto. On November 17, 1852 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 458 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. The Commissioner of Claims awarded him 8 1/3 labors of land in February 14, 1840. The land was surveyed in the Bexar Land District in 1846.

The Deed Records of Bexar County, Book 10, page 305, show that Mr. Slack and his wife, Margaret A. Slack were living in Fort Bend County, November 17, 1852. In Deed Records of Fort Bend County, Book E, page 559, it is shown that Mr. Slack was Deputy Sheriff of Fort Bend County in 1859.
J. William Slack, probably related to Joseph H. Slack, died in Fort Bend County, December 10, 1873.
Mr. Max Margurger of Flatonia, Fayette County, knows the location of the Slack family cemetery and he is confident that Joseph H. Slack is buried in it.
