RYANS, THOMAS -- Listed on Page 14 of the San Jacinto Rolls printed in 1836 as "Thos. Ryons", a member of Captain William J. E. Heard's Company of "Citizen Soldiers". On Page 35 of the San Jacinto Rolls, the name is shown as Thomas Ryons. Most of the men of Captain Heard's Company were early settlers in Texas who resided on the Colorado River. It seems, though, that this man was named Ryans, and the indications are that he had been in Texas but a short time when he joined the Army and that he left the Republic, via Nacogdoches, in 1836. He had received no land from the Mexican Government and he applied for no land, directly, from the Republic of Texas.

The following transfer is recorded in Book J, Page 134 of the Deed Records of Nacogdoches County:
"Municipality of Nacogdoches, Texas, September 20, 1836.
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: That I, Thomas Ryans, of Texas and now of the Municipality of Nacogdoches, for value recvd. from Levi Dikes, I do by these presents grant, bargain and seal to the sd. Levi Dikes all my right title claim and interest to all the land that is or may be granted to me, Thomas Ryans, for my services in the Battle of San Jacinto on the 21st day of April 1836, binding myself my heirs and assigns &c.

"THE STATE OF TEXAS
Gonzales County
Before the undersigned clark of the county court of the aforesaid county this day appeared Miles G. Dikes (well known to me) a subscribing witness to the annexed instrument of writing, who being duly sworn says that 'Thomas Ryans executed the same in his presence for the consideration and purposes therein set forth and that he witnessed the same at the request of said Ryans.
Given under my hand and seal this 17th day of August A. D. 1848

In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 3295 signed by Captain Squire Haggard and countersigned by Major George M. Jewell it is certified that Thomas Ryans joined Captain George M. Jewell's Company of Tennessee Volunteers September 19, 1836 for a period of three months. The Compiler does not know that this is the man of that name who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.
