MITCHELL, JAMES -- In the Headright Certificate issued to him for one league and one labor of land by the Houston County Board of Land Commissioners it is stated that Mr. Mitchell came to Texas in February 1834. He was a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's Nacogdoches Company at San Jacinto.

In the Probate Records of Anderson County it is shown that Mr. Mitchell died in Houston County in 1836. His son, James D. Mitchell, was living in Austin County, December 29, 1848 and was at that time the administrator of his estate. James Douthet was appointed administrator in Houston County February 4, 1838 and was succeeded by Roland W. Box in 1840. The estate received Bounty Certificate No. 942 for 320 acres of land due Mr. Mitchell for his services in the army from March 7 to May 20, 1836 and Donation Certificate No. 1084 for 640 acres of land due him for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. The land was surveyed in Anderson County.
