LE GRAND, EDWARD OSWALD -- Born in Burke County, North Carolina in 1801, a son of Abner LeGrand. He moved with his parents to Alabama and according to the Headright Certificate issued to him in 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the San Augustine County Board of Land Commissioners he arrived in Texas in 1834. At the outbreak of the revolution in 1835 he enlisted in Captain George English's Company. He received Donation Certificate No. 831, dated August 2, 1860 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835. On August 22, 1860 he received Bounty Certificate No. 283 for 320 acres of land due for three months service in the army in 1835.

On February 1, 1836 Mr. LeGrand and Stephen W. Blount were elected delegates from San Augustine municipality to the Constitutional Convention called to meet at Washington, Texas March 1st. They both signed the Declaration of Independence. On March 15th, before the convention adjourned Mr. LeGrand enlisted in the army and left to join it. In Service Record No. 4283 it is certified that he served in the army from March 15 to June 15 1836. At San Jacinto he was a member of Captain William Kimbro's "San Augustine Company". On August 2, 1860 he received Bounty Certificate No. 284 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 15 to June 15, 1836.
In the year 1838 Mr. LeGrand was elected Chief Justice of San Augustine County. He was elected Inspector General of the Third Brigade, November 18, 1839. He was never married and during the later years of his life he lived at the home of his sister and her husband W.C. Norwood, about twelve miles south of San Augustine. There he died in 1870 and was buried in the Graham Cemetery nearby.
Eight signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence participated in the Battle of San Jacinto, General Sam Houston, E.O. LeGrand, Dr. William Junius Mottley, Thomas Jefferson Rusk, James Collinsworth, Robert M, Coleman, John W. Bunton, and William B. Scates.
