CRITTENDEN, WILLIAM -- Name not shown on the San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836. Mr. Crittenden was a member of the Texas Veterans Association. In the Year Book published by that organization in 1875 he is shown as having been born in Virginia in 1811 and as having arrived in Texas in 1835.

On September 1, 1858 Mr. Crittenden, while living in Clarksville, Red River County, applied to the Commission of Claims for the land due him for his services in the army of the Republic. In his deposition in the files of the Court of Claims, General Land Office, Austin, he stated that he came to Texas from Alabama as a member of Captain Peyton S. Wyatt's company. He stated that he was shot at Washington-on-the-Brazos and for a time could not continue in the service. He stated, however, that he joined the main army at Gonzales and was assigned to Captain Thomas J. Rabb's Company. When Captain Karnes' company of cavalry was organized he was transferred to it. He swore that he was in the skirmish on the 20th but was sick the following day and as a consequence did not participate in the battle.
Mr. Crittenden was issued a Veterans Donation Certificate for 1280 acres of land March 31, 1881. His home at that time was in Gatesville, Coryell County.
