CONLEE, PRESTON -- Born in Tennessee in 1798. In the Headright Certificate issued to him January 19, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Bastrop County Board of Land Commissioners it is stated that he came to Texas in 1835. He was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company of Mina (Bastrop) Volunteers at San Jacinto and on May 21, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 140 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On May 21, 1838 he received Bounty Certificate No. 1139 for 320 acres of land for his services in the army from February 28 to June 1, 1836.

Mr. Conlee served as sheriff of Bastrop County for ten years. His home was designated as the "Half Way House" since it was situated on the highway midway between Austin and La Grange.

In October, 1857, Mr. Conlee was married to Martha E. Clanton who was born in Minden, Louisiana, August 6, 1833. To this union were born the following children: Martha, who married a Mr. Dobbins; Sue, who married a Mr. McKemie; Anna, who married a Mr. Johnson; and Preston Conlee In 1870 Mr. Conlee moved his family to Gainesville, Cooke County. There he died March 7, 1874, and Mrs. Conlee died November 19, 1924. Both are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Gainesville.
