CASILLAS, GABRIEL -- The compiler is responsible for having the name Graviel Casias put on the bronze plaque in the San Jacinto memorial monument on which are inscribed the names of the Texans who participated in the battle of San Jacinto. He thinks the name should be Gabriel Casillas.

Born in Texas, as is stated in the Headright Certificate to Gabeill Casillos for one-third of a league of land February 8, 1838 by the Board of Land Commissioners for Bexar County. The Certificate had been assigned to John Sutherland. He was a member of Captain Juan N. Seguin's Company. His name was omitted from the official San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836, and from the official roll of those who were detailed to guard the baggage on April 21, 1836 at the Camp opposite Harrisburg. On February 19, 1855 Graviel Casias was issued Donation Certificate No. 1924 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. On the same date he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1924 for 640 acres of land for having served in the army for six months, enlistment period not shown. Both certificates had been assigned to W. P. De Normandi.

Mr. Casillas was living in Zapata County, May 14, 1882 when he sold his Veterans Donation Certificate for 640 acres of land for $300.00.

Note to Mr. Moore: Any sketch of Graviel Casias in the San Jacinto books should be transferred to the sketch of Gabriel Casillas.

The biographies have been scanned from the original typescripts, a process that sometimes allows for mistakes in the new text.
