HUGHES, JAMES - Born in Mississippi. On June 6, 1832 he received one-fourth of a league of land in DeWitt’s colony in what are now Gonzales and De Witt Counties. In Headright Certificate No. 1 issued to him January 15, 1838 for one-twelfth of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Austin county it is certified that he came to Texas in 1832.

There was a James Hughes who participated in the battle of Velasco. In Service Record No. 3219 it is certified that Mr. Hughes was First Lieutenant of Captain Philip Coe’s company at Gonzales, March 5, 1836. This company was disbanded and Mr. Hughes was assigned to Captain William W. Hill’s Company. He was issued Donation Certificate No. 292 for 640 acres of land June 6, 1838 for having been detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. The land was surveyed in what is now Burleson County. On June 6, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3737 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836.

The Probate Records of Burleson County show that Mr. Hughes died in Navarro County in 1858.
