Description

Cap plate for U.S. dragoon shako. Copper tinged eagle mounted on thin brass (or brass on tin) sunburst background. Two loop posts on reverse for attachment. One post is missing. Two holes on plate through which wires attach to eagle. Wires on one side are missing, so the eagle is loose.

Provenance

Belonged to Major L.O. Harn. These plates were worn on the leather full dress shako until the shako was discontinued in 1851. (American Military Insignia 1800-1851 by Campbell and Howell).
