Site preparation for capital project to begin this month

LA PORTE, TX — The San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield Association (SJMBA), with the Texas Historical Commission (THC), has selected Houston firm Linbeck Group, LLC, as the general contractor for its capital project, which includes major improvements to the monument, a new visitor center, restored grounds, and enhanced visitor amenities. For Linbeck, a firm founded in Houston nearly 90 years ago, this project represents a chance to bring its deep expertise in historic preservation and complex construction to one of Texas’s most iconic landmarks while honoring the site’s enduring legacy.

“We are thrilled to have Linbeck onboard to bring the monument restoration and new museum building to fruition,” said Amy Rogers, Executive Director. “With extensive experience in historic preservation, a track record of working with our project partners, and deep Texas roots, Linbeck is the right fit for this project, and we look forward to kicking off work with them this summer.”

Founded in 1938 and headquartered in Houston, Linbeck is nationally recognized for its expertise in construction management, historic preservation, and complex civic projects. Its portfolio includes internationally recognized museums, performing arts centers, and major public facilities across Texas and beyond, with experience restoring aging structures, integrating modern systems, and managing construction in sensitive environments. The firm has earned 25 Build America Awards from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC of America) and numerous safety honors. Linbeck’s selection also carries personal historical significance: Family ancestor Jesse Bartlett fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, creating a generational connection to the site the firm will now help preserve.

“San Jacinto is a special project where the history and reverence of the site shape how you approach every decision,” said Thomas O. Cole II, Linbeck Group, LLC President. “Our team has built some of the most technically demanding preservation and culturally significant projects in Texas, and we take that responsibility seriously. We’re ready to get to work.”

Linbeck joins partners Lake Flato (lead architect), Lord Aeck Sargent (lead historic preservation), Gallagher & Associates (museum design), and TBG (landscape architect) on the project. Work to prepare the site for construction will begin this month, starting with dirt work, traffic rerouting, and the demolition of non-historical structures that are past their useful life. Other early projects will include establishing a nursery to house native plants and trees to be planted on the site and deferred maintenance projects that are critical to supporting the new infrastructure. Restoration of the monument and construction of the new museum building is expected to begin in early 2027. The site will remain accessible to visitors throughout construction. Additional details will be shared on the museum website as the project progresses.
