April 21, 2019: San Jacinto Day
The annual commemoration of the Battle of San Jacinto that is customarily held on April 21 at the San Jacinto Monument has been cancelled for 2019. Due to the fire and chemical spill at ITC, visitors will not be allowed in to the San Jacinto Battleground on April 21; families who traditionally have celebrated Easter Sunday with picnics in the park will need to make alternate plans. Check back here for more information about park and museum opening status.
A press release from the San Jacinto Day Planning Committee includes the following text:
Official Observance of San Jacinto Day Cancelled
Houston, April 10, 2019 – Due to lingering effects from the chemical fire at ITC in March, the annual ceremony on April 21st, honoring those who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto and won independence for Texas in 1836, has been cancelled.
The battleground and adjacent road leading to the site remain closed until further notice.
The ceremony has been held each year at the San Jacinto Monument since it was officially dedicated in 1939. This is the first cancellation in the 80-year history of the monument. Prior to that time, observances were held at other locations.
