Boring begins, with the boring machine set in the pit dug on January 24.

The bore is being done about 4 feet below the surface of the ground.

A new water line will enter the monument, to provide sufficient water flow for the sprinkler system. A hole will be bored through the wall for the pipe.

Meanwhile, installation of sprinkler heads and pipes is underway in the outer basement of the monument, an area that is not open to the public.
January 18, 2006

Air is being vented from the gallery, where lead abatement is under way. Lead abatement has been completed in the lobby, and will begin in the theatre and gift shop next week.

Here is the ceiling of the lobby, showing where the acoustical tiles have been removed and holes have been cut for the installation of sprinkler heads.

Lead abatement begins, restricting access to the building.

The front door to the museum is closed to the public, but allows clean air flow in the areas where the lead paint is being abated.

Museum staff sets up temporary offices in space donated by John Manlove Marketing & Communication in Pasadena.

The building, built in 2001, offers a modern contrast to the Monument, complete in 1939.

John Manlove Marketing and Communication has provided plenty of space for the staff and their equipment.
January 5-9, 2006

Workers lay plastic sheeting as a base to cover and protect the terrazzo floors in the lobby. 3/4" plywood is laid over the plastic and connected with metal strips.

The limestone walls are also draped in plastic to protect them from small paint chips. Additional plastic is being laid over the plywood, as seen through the door to the Museum Gallery.
