A Monumental Opening
The San Jacinto Memorial Monument opened to the public on April 20, 1939, in a two-day dedication and celebration, three years after construction began on April 21, 1936. Theopening was planned by a committee of historians, educators, and public persons across the state. Special care was taken to invite representatives of those governments formerly exercising sovereignty over Texas and governments having diplomatic relations with the Republic of Texas. Museum president George A. Hill, Jr., presided over the first of seven sessions that each featured a speaker known for his contributions to history or literature.
