Physician's saddlebag (a). Brown leather with metal fittings. Leather is worn and damaged in several places. Outer flap of pouches are stamped: "ELLIOTT'S PATENT/ GRANTED JAN 18 1870/ A.A. MELLIER/ St. Louis, Mo./ SOLE PROPRIETOR". Double trays for apothecary bottles in each pouch. Tray dividers (b,c) in lower trays of each pouch. Included in saddlebag were 13 small medicine bottles (d-p) with stoppers (q-aa). (Two bottles do not have stoppers). Stoppers and tray dividers are not numbered.
Saddlebag was used by Dr. Joseph Van Gasken (1851-1901). Van Gasken was a physician at Luling, Texas from 1874 until his retirement a few years before his death. (Additional biographical notes on Van Gasken may be found in deed files). Donor is a daughter of Dr. Van Gasken.
