Provenance

Belonged to Saville Fenwick Harris, wife of Dewitt Clinton Harris. Saville Fenwick was the cousin of Isabel Cox, wife of Sidney Sherman. DeWitt Clinton Harris was the son of John Richard Harris, founder of Harrisburg and Texas revolutionary. Saville Fenwick and DeWitt Clinton Harris met in Texas and were wed in Frankfort, Kentucky Mar 19, 1849. It is probable the set was part of Saville Fenwick's dowry. Convention of the time dictated that wedding gifts and dowry pieces be engraved with the bride's name or monogram, while pieces received after the wedding were engraved with the name of both the wife and husband. The piece was passed down through the Sherman family, of which the donor is a member. Henry Hudson was a Louisville jeweler from 1841 to 1854. While Hudson was known to employ silversmiths in his shop, he also imported silver from east coast manufacturers. It is therefore also probable that the piece was made in New York or Philadelphia and then stamped with Hudson's retailer's mark.
