Description

Oil burning railroad switchman's lantern. Clear glass globe. Top painted green. Bale handle. Reads "HANDLAN... ST LOUIS, USA... PATENTED 3-4-13... 7-10-28... C18783... MOPAC." Clip holds handle in place.


Provenance

The donor states the lantern burned signal oil, a thick oil similar to whale oil. The clip held the lamp in place for use in signaling. The green paint served as a personal identification mark. The donor worked for the Frisco Railroad, predecessor to the Missouri Pacific Railroad (MOPAC), and for the United Fruit Co.
