Description

Painting. Oil on canvas. [30"H x 25"W.]? Portrait of Sidney Sherman. Bust view, full face. Brown eyes. Brown hair. Wearing a Texas Army uniform. High collared dark coat with brass buttons and gold trim. White high collared shirt. 4" antique gold leaf frame. Brass plaque on frame reads "SIDNEY SHERMAN (1805-1873) Commander, Left Wing, Texas Army Battle of San Jacinto... GIFT OF LUCY SHERMAN BRADY HUNT".


Provenance

Painted just before Sherman left for Texas from Kentucky in December 1835. The donor is Sherman's granddaughter.
