BRAKE, MICHAEL, JR. -- Born in 1791, as is shown in a list of the names of all men available for military service in the Municipality of Liberty July 20, 1836. In January 1935 the original draft was in possession of R. W. Abbott of Beaumont, He came to Texas in 1831, as is stated in the Headright Certificate issued to his estate, April 27, 1838 for one third of a league of land by the Jefferson County Board of Land Commissioners.

In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 480 it is stated that a shotgun broke in Mr. Brake's hand during the battle of San Jacinto in which he participated as a member of Captain William M. Logan's Company.

Mr. Brake died in Jefferson County in 1837, as is shown in the Probate Records of Jefferson County, Book A, page 54. Isaac Applewhite was appointed administrator of his estate, January 3, 1840. His heirs did not apply for the bounty and donation land due him for his services in the army.

Written by Louis W. Kemp, between 1930 and 1952. Please note that typographical and factual errors have not been corrected from the original sketches. The biographies have been scanned from the original typescripts, a process that sometimes allows for mistakes in the new text. Researchers should verify the accuracy of the texts' contents through other sources before quoting in publications. Additional information on the veteran may be available in the Herzstein Library.
