Rainey, Clement  ( 1807  -  1853 )

RAINEY, CLEMENT -- Born in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky in 1807. He arrived in Texas in 1831, as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 29 for three-fourths of one league and one labor of land issued to him March 1, 1838 by the Board of Land Commissioners for Washington County. He had married since March 18, 1835, when he received title, in the name of Clement Ramey, to one-fourth of a league of land in Robertson's Colony, situated in the present county of Milam. The Headright Certificate was also issued to Clement Ramey.

The following information concerning Mr. Rainey is contained in Comptroller' s Military Service Record No. 7160: "Joined the colonial army of Texas October 8, 1835 in Captain John G. Swisher's Washington County Company. He was one of the men who entered Bexar on the morning of December 5 and took part in reducing it. Discharged at Cole's Settlement (Independence) December 22, 1835. Rainey enlisted in Captain William W. Hill's Company, participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. He was promoted to first sergeant. He was discharged May 30, 1836."

Clement Rainey was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3470, May 17, 1838 for 640 acres of land for having served in the army from October 8, 1835 to June 1, 1836. On December 4, 1838 he was issued Donation certificate No. 651 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.

On an original muster roll of Captain Hill's Company, the following information concerning Mr. Rainey is found: The date and place of his birth. He was recruited by Captain Joseph P. Lynch at the home of Asa Mitchell in Washington County March 2, 1836. He was five feet, eight inches in height, of fair complexion, with blue eyes and light hair.

In the Probate Records of Washington County, it is shown that Mr. Rainey died in that county in 1853. J. W. Rainey was appointed administrator of his estate, January 3, 1854.
