Elliott, James D.

The Kemp Sketch (What is this?) | Download the original typescript

ELLIOTT, JAMES D. -- Came to Texas in 1835 as is shown in the Headright Certificate issued to him February 8, 1838, for one-third of a league of land by the Harrisburg County Board.

On page 68, muster rolls in the General Land Office he is shown as J. D. Elliot and as having joined Captain John Chenoweth's company, January 17, 1836. His name appears as Jas. D. Elliott on the soldier's Memorial drafted at Refugio, on about February 4, 1836. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 9008 for 640 acres of land for having served in the army from October 10, 1835 to May 28, 1836. This he sold to Nathaniel Townsend. He was a member of Captain Henry W. Karnes' company of cavalry at San Jacinto. On September 19, 1836 he was elected Captain of Company A, of a regiment of Dragoons. On November 20, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 4430 for 1280 acres of land for having served in the army from November 18, 1836 to October 30, 1838. He sold the certificate in Harrisburg County November 21, 1838 for $300 to R. H. Chinn.

Captain Elliott was living in Harrisburg County, November 12, 1839 when he sold his Headright Certificate to John James. He evidently left Texas shortly afterward since he did not apply for a Donation Certificate for the 640 acres due him for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto Donation certificates were not transferable.
