WILLOUGHBY, LEIPER-- Came to Texas before May 2, 1835 as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 69 issued to him January 25, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Brazoria County Board. He served under Captain Henry S. Brown in the Battle of Velasco June 26, 1832 (See the Lamar Papers, page 112). He received Bounty Certificate No. 9202 for 640 acres for serving in the army from March 13 to September 13, 1836. He was living in Lavaca County April 18, 1851 when he sold the Certificate to I. G. Searcy of Washington County. In Service Record No. 349 it is certified that he served as a private, corporal, sergeant and captain. He was a member of Captain William H. Patton's "Columbia Company" at San Jacinto and received Donation Certificate No. 910 for 640 acres of land June 10, 1839 for having participated in the battle. A duplicate certificate was issued August 17, 1860.
Mr. Willoughby made affidavit July 7, 1853 that he was a member of Captain Nicholas M. Dawson's Company in 1842 during the Vasquez Campaign and fought under Colonel John H. Moore against Indians in the fall of 1842.
Mr. Willoughby died in Lavaca County in 1874 while a member of the Texas Veterans Association.
