NABERS, WILLIAM

Came to Texas in February, 1836, as is stated in the Headright Certificate issued to him February 17, 1838, for one-third of a league of land by the Fort Bend County Board. He was a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's Nacogdoches Company at San Jacinto and on December 12, 1838, was issued Donation Certificate No. 674 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On May 1, 1838, he received Bounty Certificate No. 3116 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 7 to May 29, 1836. In the certificate it is stated that he was discharged by a surgeon's certificate on inability. On November 25, 1837, he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 541 for 320 acres of land for his services in the army from July 20 to October 20, 1836.

After retiring from the army it seems that Mr. Nabers left Nacogdoches and settled in Fort Bend County. He has his headright land surveyed in Fayette County and moved to that county to settle on it. He was living in Fayette County August 25, 1838, when he sold Bounty Certificates Nos. 3116 and 1541 to S. M. Fort. He served as County Assessor from 1839 to 1840 and as Sheriff from 1841 to 1844 and died there in 1845. His brother, Robert W. Nabers, a San Jacinto Veteran, was appointed administrator of his estate on December 29, 1845.

The biographies have been scanned from the original typescripts, a process that sometimes allows for mistakes in the new text. Researchers should verify the accuracy of the texts' contents through other sources before quoting in publications. Additional information on the veteran may be available in the Herzstein Library.
