LESSASSIER, ALEXANDER
In the Headright Certificate issued to his heirs July 2, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Washington County Board it is stated that Mr. Lessassier come to Texas in 1834. The following information concerning him is found on the original muster roll of Captain William W. Hill's Company, in which company he participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. He was born in Opelauses, Louisiana in 1796. He was enlisted by Captain Joseph P. Lynch March 1, 1836 at the home of Asa Mitchell, in what is now Washington County. He was five feet, ten inches in height, of fair complexion and had blue eyes and sandy hair.
THE TELEGRAPH AND TEXAS REGISTER, Columbia (now West Columbia) carried the following notice in its issue of January 11, 1837; "Died in this place, on the 8th instant, Mr. A. Lessassier, of New Orleans. The deceased was a volunteer in the Army of Texas, and one of the heroes of Bexar and San Jacinto. He was buried with military honors, and his remains were followed to the grave by a large and respectable concourse of citizens."
The only land applied for by the heirs of Mr. Lessassier for his service in the army was for Bounty Certificate No. 3789 for 320 acres of land due him for having served from July 20 to November 20, 1836.
