HERRON, JOHN HARVEY

Born in North Carolina August 20, 1814. In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 5, 1838, for one-third of a league of land it is stated that he came to Texas in October 1835. He was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company of "Mina (Bastrop) Volunteers" at San Jacinto and on May 22, 1838, he was issued Donation Certificate No. 173 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On July 2, 1852, he received Bounty Certificate No. 1123 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from February 2 to June 1, 1836.

Mr. Herron was married to Martha E. Ware, who was born November 18, 1834, and died August 5, 1856. Mr. Herron died August 30, 1892, while a member of the Texas Veterans Association and was buried by the side of his wife in their family cemetery a few miles from McDade, Bastrop County. The graves of both are marked.

Children of Mr. and Mrs. Herron were Mattie, who was married to W. S. Watson; Lizzie Herron, who married John Tinnin; and a baby who died at birth August 3, 1856.
