BARTON, JEFFERSON A.
Born in South Carolina. He came to Texas in 1830, as is shown in the Headright Certificate issued to him February 3, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Bastrop County Board.
Mr. Barton served under Captain George M. Collinsworth at the capture of Goliad, October 9, 1835 and was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley’s Company of "Mina (Bastrop) Volunteers," at San Jacinto. He received Donation Certificate No. 122 for 640 acres of land May 21, 1838 for having participated in the battle. On February 13, 1858 his heirs were issued Bounty Certificate No. 265 for 320 acres of land for his services in the army from February 28 to June 1, 1836.
In the Court of Claims files in the General Land Office it is shown that on July 17, 1857 John Harvey of Burnet County made application for the bounty land then due the heirs of Jefferson A. Barton, who had died in Bastrop County in 1839. Mr. Harvey made an affidavit that he had married Sina Barton, sister of Jefferson A. Barton and he said another sister and a brother of Mr. Barton were at that time living in Burnet County.
The Deed Records of Burnet County show the following heirs of Mr. Barton living in Burnet County April 2, 1862. John Harvey and wife, Sina; A. H. Cavin and wife, Charlotte and William F. Barton. Mrs. Harvey and Mrs. Cavin were sisters of Jefferson A. Barton and William F. Barton was his brother. Mrs. Cavin and William F. Barton were alive as late as October 25, 1871.
