Creator Sketch:

Charles Justin Wolkarte was born in 1839 probably in Orleans Parish, Louisiana.  He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Louisiana.  Chalres J. Wolkarte died in 1923 and is buried in Houston, Texas.

Scope and Content Note:

Legal documents (5) written in French or English collected by C. J. Wolkarte comprise this collection.  These legal documents include an insurance policy, sale of land (written in French), and a public instrument of protest noting the non-payment of a note of Michel Batet filed with the Louisiana State Bank in New Orleans.  A grant of discharge to Georges A. Memengre, corporal of the company of the Mexican War in garrison New Orleans, dated 1763, has artifactual value.  The document is written in French and features a decorative border.  A translation of this document from French to English is included in the collection.  Of interest is a bill of sale for slaves, from Pierre Piadat to JAcques Lefort, New Orleans, from 1836.

Archivist's note:

Also of interest are three pamphlets in French which have been removed from this collection and cataloged separately: Second Mémorial de Jean Daly, alias Picaillon, Marchand de Moutarde, about 1853, printed by Frank F. Barclay, Chartres and St. Louis, New Orleans; Procès D'Anastasie Desarzant, avec Pierre Leblanc, New Orleans, 1857; Nouvel Abécédaire, ou, Alphabet Syllabique Contenant les Premiers Éléments de la Lecture, les Prières Journalières, les Principes de la Bonne Éducation, en Douze Strophes, Quelques Historiettes et Fab.
