Creator Sketch:

Edward Winfield was born in Petersburg, Virginia ca. 1804 and moved to Texas in 1835.  In 1836 he served as a major in the Texas army.  After the war, he served as clerk of the Second Judicial District Court and as assistant secretary of the Senate for the second session of the Second Congress of the Republic of Texas.  In 1837 he married Ann H. Gray Vernon, daughter of Peter Gray who was the son of William Fairfax Gray.

The Winfields resided in Harris County, Texas, Camargo, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas until the raids of Rafael Vásquez and Adrián Woll in 1842 compelled Edward to volunteer for the Somervell expedition where he served in Capt. Jerome Bonaparte Robertson's company.  Winfield also served in the Mexican War in Ben McCulloch's Company A. of John Coffee Hays' First Texas Mounted Rifles.  After the Mexcian War, Winfield served in the House of the Third Legislature of the State of Texas.

Scope and Content Note:

Correspondence, financial and legal documents, printed material, and a photograph comprise this collection.  Correspondence includes letters written by Ann H. Winfield to various acquaintences regarding family and money concerns.  Also in the collection is a letter from Britton announcing the wedding of daughter "Lizzie" to Judge Edmund J. Davis.  Of note is a letter written in Chinese and dated in the old Chinese manner known as Chia-tze to Chow Heng regarding the impending arrival of a Mr. Walker.  Included with this letter are the translation and a brief contextual note provided by the Vice-Consulate of the Republic of China in Houston.

The financial document series consists of an abstract of provisions issued from Sept. 1, 1844 to Sept. 20, 1846, to the troops of the United States at Camargo and Monterrey, Mexico, where Edward Winfield resided.  As part of the legal documents, there is a deed of 7 sitios of land from Antonio Ramirez Gonzales to Marcos Radiche in 1858.

The printed material is pages from a book containing the acts of the governor and legislative council of the territory of Florida in 1833.  Of note is the section regarding John Y. Garey.  The card photograph is of an unidentified older woman endorsed: "For Miss Cora Ogain from her friend Jn. V. Garey."
