Creator Sketch:
Jessie Andres Vick served as a Lady’s Honor Member in the Houston Light Guard. Vick obtained membership in the militia company on October 8, 1879. The Houston Light Guard became the first uniformed militia company organized in post-Reconstruction Houston, Texas. The group’s charter was officially approved by the state of Texas on April 21, 1873. The Light Guards mobilized between 1876 and 1903 for the restoration or maintenance of the peace during race crises in Southeast Texas, political feuds, labor strikes, a yellow fever quarantine strike, crowd control and protection of property, and for the 1900 Galveston hurricane.

Scope and Content Note:
Printed materials and a photograph document the Houston Light Guards and its honorary member, Jessie Andres Vick. Printed materials consist of an October 1879 membership certificate for Lady’s Honorary Member Jessie Andres of Houston, souvenir cards for the May 23, 1891 event for the laying of the corner stone of the Houston Light Guard Armory, and a May 24, 1891 newspaper clipping from the Galveston Daily News about the Houston Light Guards organization and membership. The Papers also contain an 1888 photograph of the Houston Light Guards.
