Creator Sketch:

Cecil Menzie Thomson was born in Brown's Town, Jamaica, on October 8, 1889, to John and Mary Thomson.  By 1913, the family had moved to Toronto, Canada, and Thomson enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War I.  He may have learned photography in the Toronto studio of William Coles.  Thomson maried Ellen Louise Walton, Coles' niece, in 1919, and moved to Texas in 1920, eventually setting up a photography studio in Houston.  He engaged in both still and film photography, and copyrighted his work under the names of Cecil Thomson Studios and ABC Photo Thomson.  With Ellen, Thomson had two children, Cecil M., Jr. and Mary Ellen.  Later in life he divorced Ellen and married Laurine Cady.  Thomson died of a heart attack in 1952, and is buried in Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Scope and Content Note:

Photographs of Houston, Galveston, and the Texas Gulf Coast region provide a glimpse of the past from 1860 to 1953.  The City of Houston street scenes show the growth of a city during its boom period.  The Houston Buildings and Houston Churches images focus on specific buildings, while the Houston Aerial Views and Skyline Views take a broader view of the city.  The Historical, Individuals, and Miscellaneous group looks at Houston luminaries such as Jesse H. Jones and Oscar Holcombe, and at Houston’s history.  The Hunting and Fishing series displays the rewards of the sport for the camera.  Houston Theatres offers a glimpse of the movie palaces of the 1920s and ‘30s.  Oil Fields, Oil Fires and Gushers and the Houston Ship Channel groups show the impact of industry on the region, while the photos of Airplanes show the glamor of this new industry.  The Houston Fat Stock Show, Prize Cattle and Rodeo photos look at an older Texas industry.  Early beauty pageants are the focus of the Bathing Beauties series.  The series on Galveston, Texas, highlights some of the significant industrial and leisure locations of the city.  Postcards show the results of the Texas City Disaster of April 16, 1947.  Three envelopes disclose how Thomson filed his negatives in his studio.

Archivist's Note:

Titles of photographs are initially from the caption appearing on the photograph, secondarily from the back of the photographic prints, or, lacking these, from the folder containing the print.  Spelling from the original source has been retained.  Additional subject information about the image is in brackets.  Dates provided on the negative, print or folder are listed as provided; dates in brackets are supplied based on the contents of the photograph.

Copies of some of the photographs in this collection are on loan to the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Houston Public Library.  Copies of additional photographs by Cecil Thomson have been provided to the Herzstein Library by descendants of Cecil Thomson.
