Creator Sketch:
The papers were originally loaned to the San Jacinto Museum of History in 1941 by Frank Shannon of Wharton County.
Scope and Content Note:
Correspondence, ephemera, and creative works document the family history of Frank Shannon through the records of members of the Byrne, Hany, Wallis, Wallace, and Steen families. Correspondence concerns the publishing work of D. Byrne, the difficulties encountered by the Rev. James Wallis as he travels to San Antonio to preach, observations about conditions in Lavaca, Texas, in 1851 offered by Ellen Wallis, and an 1877 congratulatory letter and advice about a woman’s role in marriage sent by W.P. Holloway to Miss Nannie. A 1912 postcard communication between Lizzie and T.C. Steen of Lake Charles, Louisiana records the image of a printing office in Wharton, Texas. An obituary documents the life of Frances Byrne. A 1877 poem, “Problem”, written by Gretchen, portions of a sermon likely written by James Wallis, and a genealogical record of the David Wallace and Nancy Hany descendants provide insight into aspects of the family life of Frank Shannon’s forebears. Transcripts are provided for all documents in the collection, with the exception of the 1912 postcard.
