Citation: [Identification of Item], Henry V. Schumann Papers, MC046, San Jacinto Museum of History, Houston, Texas.
Creator Sketch:
Heinrich Valentin Schumann was born in New Braunfels, Texas, February 18, 1868, the oldest of seven children of Friedrick Schumann (1840 – 1922) and Anna Maria Mickesch (1845 – 1920). After attending local schools, he entered an apprenticeship with Dreiss Drugstore in San Antonio, Texas. He later attended the Maryland College of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated on March 26, 1889. Returning to Texas, he purchased the drug store of Alex Reszczynski in New Braunfels and opened for business on October 8, 1890. He served both on the State Board of Pharmacy (c. 1911 – 1915) and as a member of the Board of Pharmaceutical Examiners for his judicial district.
Schumann married Elfriede Hoffman (1872 – 1953) on April 30, 1892. They had no children. Schumann died at his home on May 22, 1942 and is buried in the Comal Cemetery, New Braunfels.
Scope and Content Note:
Notebooks, financial documents, and printed materials document the student life and early business years of Henry V. Schumann (1868 – 1942), a druggist in New Braunfels, Texas from 1890 until 1942. The student notebooks, written in English and German, record class notes (8) and pharmaceutical formulas (2) and were produced while a student in the Maryland College of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland (1885? – 1888). Two daybooks record the daily financial transactions of Schumann’s business from 1881 – 1893. An early promotional item from Schumann’s drug store, The Regulator Diary or Pocket Companion for Everybody, advertises “Dr. Simmons Liver Regulator or Medicine” while providing “valuable hints for the health and comfort of all.” An advertising supplement to The Herald, December, 1893, contains 12 pages of advertisements from local businesses in the New Braunfels, Comal County, area including H. V. Schumann, The Prescription Druggist. Eight announcements and catalogues by colleges of pharmacy demonstrate Schumann’s interest in professional education. Two panoramic photographs of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association (n.d., 1912) document Schumann’s participation in professional organizations. A single photograph is of Schumann.
Archivist’s Note:
This collection is a part of an accession donated by Mrs. Henry V. Schumann shortly after the death of her husband in 1942. Included in the collection were three other finite collections. Of these, the Alex Reszczynski Papers and the August Forcke Papers may also contain materials related to Henry V. Schumann.
Further information about Henry V. Schumann can be obtained from the Sophienburg Museum and Archives, 200 Seguin, New Braunfels, Texas 78130.
