Richard F. Miller, a resident of Bedford County, Virginia, arrived in Texas in 1836 during the Runaway Scrape. His arrival came shortly after the death of his brother Thomas R. Miller, who was killed at the Alamo.
Richard F. Miller's cousin was John Winston Quarles. John W. Quarles was born in 1811, the son of John and Sarah Winston Quarles. John W. Quarles married Cornelia M. Barksdale in 1846 and together they had seven children. John W. Quarles died in 1888.

Scope and Content Note:
The Miller-Quarles collection is composed of five letters that provide accounts of the newly formed Republic of Texas. The collection is organized by sender, beginning with Richard F. Miller. His correspondence includes two letters to his cousin John Winston Quarles regarding family news, a trip along the Mississippi River and references to Houston and Texas. Of note is an 1836 letter which states an account heard from Col. Bennett regarding the Battle of San Jacinto. The third is a letter sent from Miller to his brother Edward B. Miller regarding news of acquaintances, Louisiana weather and Richard's thoughts on the whereabouts of Santa Anna. A letter from C. V. Dashiell to J. W. Quarles concerns business with a Mr. Hank. In addition, a letter from Thomas R. Quinby to John W. Quarles congratulates him on his safe return from "the savage country, the Republic of Texas." All letters except the C. V. Dashiell correspondence have an accompanying typed transcript.
