Creator Sketch:

Albert Kresse of Stuttgart, Germany was born in 1886 and died in 1961.  Kresse is a noted bibliographer of author Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864) born as Karl Postl.  Sealsfield wrote about North America and Europe and is believed to have traveled through Texas during the 1820s.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection is comprised of printed materials (8) and photographs (4). primarily relating to Charles Sealsfield.  The printed materials include German postcards of Charles Sealsfield, a lithograph of Karl Postl/Sealsfield and a biography of Charles Sealsfield written by Albert Kresse.  Also included is the engraving Galveston in Texas printed in Germany.  The photographs series contains reproductions of two portraits of Charles Sealsfield, one by C. Rust taken in 1863 and the other taken in 1864.  A photograph of a monument to Charles Sealsfield is included.  There is a photograph of a print of Andrew Jackson noted as the last likeness taken of him.

Archivist's note:

Also of interest are the copies of some of the works of Sealsfield donated by Kresse.  These include: Das Kajütenbuch, oder Nationale Charakteristiken, and Die Prärie am Jacinto: Abenteuer-roman.  Mr. Kresse also donated an 1839 German atlas entitle: Neuer Atlas der Ganzen Erde and an original watercolor of New Braunfels, Texas by Helmut Muller-Possneck of Germany ca. 1850.  All of these items are cataloged separately in the museum's collections.
