Texas Military Manuscripts
1849, 06/21 ADS. Certification by Geo. D. Brewerton, Junior Lieutenant, 1st Infantry, Military Post Rio Grande, that Thomas H. Howland, an express rider in the employ of Captain S. G. French, Assistant Quartermaster, while on a scout for Indians on June 19, 1849, lost a government Colt’s patent pistol, and that the loss took place “while in the discharge of public service.”
