Creator Sketch:

Born in Connecticut in 1817, Robert Benedict Russell emigrated to San Augustine, Texas, in 1835.  Joining the Texian Army, he fought at the Battle of San Jacinto and later returned to San Augustine where he Russell married Lavinia Brownrigg in 1841.  Russell published the San Augustine Redlander (1846 – 1850) and then moved to Sabine Pass (1850).  He later located to Orange, Texas, in 1854 where he was the postmaster from 1861 to 1875.  In 1873 he patented a process for bundling shingles and ran a steam-operated shingle mill.  He died in an accident in 1880.

Lavinia and Robert Russell had six children.  Their son, Henry Hoyt Russell married Susan Russell and produced three children, George, Julia and Robert.  Julia Russell Campbell’s son, Hillary Hoyt Campbell, a businessman in Orange, Texas, donated the materials in the collection to the San Jacinto Museum of History over a period of 27 years.

Scope and Content Note:

Photographs, ephemera, newspaper clippings, and printed materials, comprise the bulk of this collection donated by the great-grandson of San Jacinto Veteran Robert B. Russell and related to the Russell and Campbell families and southeast Texas.  Of particular interest are 56 photographs (1865 – 1901) which document 27 acquaintances of Julia Russell from her school days at Incarnate Word Academy in Houston to Hamilton Female College in Lexington, Kentucky.  Nine photographs contain images of family members including Robert B. Russell and Lavinia Brownrigg Russell. Orange, Texas, and the Sabine River country are the subjects of another 11 photographs.  A collection of dance cards (1891 – 1894), National Recovery Administration (NRA) stickers (1933 – 1936), and 20 Boy Scout items including membership cards, badge cards, and certificates (1924 – 1938) are also of interest.  The collection contains a photographic copy of the catalog of a 1935 S. Seymour Thomas Exhibit held Los Angeles, California.   His portrait of Sam Houston hangs in the San Jacinto Museum of History.
