Creator Sketch:

Born on October 16, 1807, John V. Breeding migrated to Texas from Virginia with his parents in February 1833. He served in the Texas Army under Sam Houston in the San Jacinto Campaign, although he did not fight in the battle. The first sheriff of Fayette County, Breeding resided in the county for the remainder of his life. He married Louisa Parks Ware on February 10, 1842, and had eight children. Breeding died in 1869 and was buried in the family cemetery near Fayetteville, Texas.

Scope and Content Note:

Financial and legal documents relating to John V. Breeding comprise the bulk of this small collection of 14 documents ranging from 1838 to 1870. Of particular note is a letter written from Fidelie Breeding, Breeding’s brother and fellow San Jacinto Veteran, from Vera Cruz, Mexico, in 1847 during the Mexican War. A certified copy of Breeding’s will is also contained within the collection. Photostats were produced for all the documents.
