Creator Sketch:

Jacob Binz is credited with building the first "skyscraper" in Houston, the Binz Building.  The Binz building was built in 1894 at 413-419 Main Street.  The original Binz building has since been demolished and replaced by a new building which retained the name and location of the original historic building.  Jacob Binz married Anna Yeager.  Their daughter Adaline married August Moser in 1880.  After the death of Moser, Adaline married Fred Carl in 1904; she died at the age of 89 in 1925.  She was survived by her son, Ernst A. Moser, who was born in 1883.  Ernst Moser married a Miss Schultz, daughter of Mary Jane Coon Schultz.  Mr. and Mrs. Moser are the donors of the collection.

Scope and Content Note:

A collection of printed materials and photographs document the Binz family from photographs illustrating life in the early 1900s to images of the historic Binz Building, Houston's first "skyscraper."  Printed materials include a Houston City street railway ticket ca. 1868.  There is a print from a magazine of the Binz Building, which features a hand colored sky.  Photographs include a daguerreotype of Anna Yeager Binz at age thirty, a hand colored photograph of W. J. Lemp's Beer and Ice Vaults, a photograph of the W. J. Lemp's Beer Depot, and two photographs from the early 1900s featuring Chicago motor vehicles in Houston, Texas.
