Creator Sketch:

Mrs. Claire Allen Edbon, born Claire E. Daley on October 3, 1882, was the daughter of W. H. Daley and Annie Jane Hanlon Daley.  She was raised in Missouri.

Claire E. Daley married Judge Augustus Chapman Allen on July 9, 1908.  Judge Allen was born at Houston, Texas on March 2, 1861, son of Samuel and Margaret Allen.  Samuel Allen, the brother of Augustus Chapman Allen and John K. Allen, along with his brothers was a co-founder of the city of Houston.  Judge Allen died on July 13, 1924.

Mrs. Claire Allen later remarried.  In 1940, wishing to keep the history of Houston in its founding city, Claire A. Edbon donated a collection of historical documents pertaining to the Allen Family to the San Jacinto Museum.  Claire A. Edbon died on January 14, 1944.

Scope and Content Note:

Correspondence, a diary, legal papers, genealogical notes, printed materials and photographs document the Allen family from 1833-1894.  A.C. Allen correspondence consists of four letters received from 1833 to 1849, concerning real estate, the death of his brother J.K. Allen, land grants, lumber shipping, and news of the Comanche.  J.K. Allen correspondence consists of two letters from 1835 and 1838, concerning the Badillo grant and securing a land certificate.  S.L. Allen correspondence consists of a single letter from 1845 concerning the sale of one tract of land.  A single unsigned letter concerns the marriage of Miss Isabella Harris.  The diary, written by an unknown woman, contains recipes and shopping lists.  Legal papers include appointments, land deeds and grants, indentures, a will, and a petition for a U.S. Senate seat pertaining to or from members of the Allen family.  Genealogical notes consist of a single document and envelope of genealogical data on the Allen family.  Printed Materials consist of a single pamphlet by William Ware describing Houston as it was on April 14, 1869.  Photographs in this collection consist of Charlotte Allen (Mrs. A.C. Allen), A.C. Allen, Samuel L. Allen, his wife Margaret E. Caffrey and an unidentified young boy of the Allen family.  The unidentified young boy and the portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Allen are cased photographs.  The collection is arranged by series, according to type of material, then by sub-series, according to the creator.
