COOKE, THOMAS -- Born in Beauford, North Carolina, a son of Henry Merchant and Frances Buxton Cooke whose children were Henry Lechmere, born December 22, 1809; Thomas, born January 11, 1812; Julia Frances, born January 1, 1814; Sarah Ann, born September 23, 1815; Francis Jarvis, born July 13, 1817; William Gaston, born December 20, 1820; Mary Eliza, born January 3, 1823; Silas Lechmere born February 6, 1825 and died in Montgomery County, September 21, 1877; George Badger, born April 26, 1827; Alexander, born May 11, 1829 and Henrietta Cooke, born May 12, 1831. All were born in North Carolina.

In the Headright Certificate issued to Thomas Cooke, February 2, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Montgomery County Board it is stated that he arrived in Texas April 3, 1835. The facts in the case are as follows: Mrs. Henry Marchant Cooke died near Beauford, North Carolina, February 23, 1833 and on February 22, 1834 Mr. Cooke was married to Naomi Hackburn. Mr. Cooke died March 4, 1835 in Randolph, Tennessee. His widow returned to North Carolina. The children had emigrated to Texas settled in what is now Montgomery County. At the time the revolution began in Texas, Henry L. and William G. Cooke had returned to Tennessee to settle the estate of their father. Thomas and Francis Jarvis Cooke promptly joined the army and both participated in the battle of San Jacinto.
The following information concerning Thomas Cooke is contained in Service Record No. 6656; He served from February 27 to March 27, 1836 in Captain Turner Barne's Company; from March 17 to April 5 in Captain Allen Larrison's Company, and from April 5 to May 26 in Captain Robert J. Calder's Company of Brazoria Volunteers. On July 18, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 470 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. The land was surveyed in Navarro County.
