CONN, JAMES -- In Headright Certificate No. 198 issued to Mr. Conn for one-third of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners of Harrisburg County, May 2, 1836 it is simply stated that he came to Texas prior to March 2, 1836. There is little, if any doubt, that he arrived at Velasco January 28, 1836 on the schooner Pennsylvania, having been recruited in New Orleans for the Army of Texas by Captain Amasa Turner. On page 27 of the army rolls in the General Land Office, he is shown as a member of Captain John Hart's company at muster January 30, 1836 at Velasco. Captain Richard Roman was First Lieutenant of the company at that time but later was elected captain and as such commanded it at San Jacinto. Later Nicholas M. Dawson commanded the company and on an undated muster roll of the company the following information concerning Mr. Conn is given: He was five feet, eleven inches in height; of fair complexion; with grey eyes and dark hair. By vocation he was a carpenter. He is shown as having been enlisted by Richard Roman at Velasco, January 29, 1836.

Mr. Conn sold his Headright Certificate May 30, 1839 to Peter W. Gray for $500.00, while living in Harrisburg County. He probably left Texas shortly afterward since he did not apply for the land due him for his services in the army.
