BUTTS, AUGUSTUS J. -- In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 7, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Red River County Board, it is stated that Mr. Butts arrived in Texas January 18, 1836. In Service Record No. 7231 it is certified that Mr. Butts served in the army from March 6 to September 30, 1836; was a member of Captain Robert J. Calder's Company at San Jacinto; discharged from Captain Peyton R. Splane's Company, June 5; re-enlisted June 30, in Captain John Wade's company, from which he was discharged September 30, 1836. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2124 for 640 acres of land May 2, 1838 for his service for the period of time previously mentioned. His father was issued Donation Certificate No. 280 for 640 acres of land, April 15, 1851, due Augustus J. Butts for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto.

James C. Wilson, Commissioner of Claims, on May 29, 1857 wrote:

"I do hereby certify that there are on file in this office Witness of the heirship of Edward Butts as the father of Augustus J. Butts, formerly of Texas, now deceased, and an authentic power of attorney from said Edward Butts and James T. Butts."
