Description
Military Banner, Lone Star Rifles. Turquoise blue taffeta banner, with painted text and design in gold, outlined in black: "LONE STAR RIFLES./ [design: Laurel wreath with the lone star]/ ORGANIZED NOV' 8TH 1860." On reverse, identical design with text: "PRESENTED BY THE YOUNG LADIES/ OF GALVESTON, JUNE 21, 1877." 2 1/2" cream silk fringe on three sides; eight loops of cream silk cord and two 5" tassels at the right side. Fair to poor condition. Moderate discoloration, staining (white "chalky" along the left edge; black staining throughout). Moderate tears (taffeta), creasing. Most severe at right (weight of tassels, cord). Slight loss (wear), painted text.
Provenance
According to Texas in the War: 1861-1865 (p.209), Company L, First Texas Infantry Regiment was organized at Galveston, August 1, 1861. The local designation for the group was the "Lone Star Rifles" or the "Star Rifles".
