Dinner Brings Sam Houston to the Table

Author James L. Haley utilized documents only recently made available to cast new light on the mystery and controversy surrounding the commander of the Texian forces in his 500-page book, Sam Houston. The Austin-based writer who has written more than a half-dozen books devoted primarily to Texas history will serve as the keynote speaker for the annual San Jacinto Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Houston County Club on Tuesday, April 22.

Fritz Lanham, book editor of the Houston Chronicle writes: “The book has juice in its veins…. Sam Houston is an ambitious and nuanced treatment of a major American figure. Debates about Houston’s character and actions won’t end with this book, but it’s essential reading for those wanting to join the fray.” Haley’s interpretation of General Houston’s rationale for his actions during the Texas Revolution sparked much debate during last year’s San Jacinto Symposium, and his insight into Houston’s personality promises to generate much spirited discussion on April 22.

Jan and Tom Davis are serving as co-chairs for the benefit for the San Jacinto Museum of History Association. For ticket information and reservations, telephone Evelyn Buchner at 281.479.2421.
